For those of us planning a getaway, according to a [Travel Pulse Survey](https://www.travelpulse.com/news/features/survey-examines-how-much-americans-are-spending-on-spring-break-vacation.html), 64% will use funds they have saved. However, one in three will be using a credit card. And the rest will be using their tax return to pay for the trip. On average, Americans plan to spend $1,800 on a spring break vacation, but shockingly, 10% of Millennials plan to spend $5,000 or more on their vacations.

So how can you keep your spring break costs in check? We have put together some tips and tricks for you to use when planning your adventure.

### Get Rid of Unnecessary Expenses

This is true in your day-to-day budget, as well as your spring break budget. Think about the smaller items you purchase every day. Cutting a $5 Starbucks drink a few times a week can add up quickly. Or use an app like [Truebill](https://www.truebill.com/) to track your subscriptions. It will give you a monthly report of all of your subscriptions, and you can decide which ones need to go and which ones to keep. You would be amazed at what your iTunes account has subscribed to. While $1 here and $4 there doesn't seem like a whole bunch of money, it can get out of control quickly. Take the funds you will be saving and direct it directly to a savings account for your trip.

### Automate Your Savings

This is one of the easiest ways to save. Not only do you not have to think about how and when you are going to save, but it brings consistency to the plan. I like to have funds auto-transferred into specific accounts on payday, and it works wonderfully. There are also apps out there that can help you. My favorite is [Digit](https://digit.co/), which rounds up your purchases and deposits those funds into a savings account. This app also helps you set up goals and tell you where you can cut spending to reach your goals.

### Use That Student ID For All The Discounts.

Even when booking your travel, there may be discounts offered with a Student ID. Still, when you are at your destination, you can use your ID for discounts on experiences, food, and even entertainment. Student discounts are offered everywhere, so take advantage of the savings. While you are a student, you can also apply for an International Student ID Card. The ISID can get you traveling discounts, activity discounts, and into a number of events and venues absolutely free. If you are traveling abroad for spring break, it's a must. Check it out [here](https://www.isic.org/get-your-card/).

### Last-Minute Deals

If you are a planner, this one may be hard for you. Last minute deals are some of the best deals out there. If you can be patient and wait until the last minute to book, you could get a screaming deal. [Hotwire](https://www.hotwire.com/) has these last-minute deals on their app for hotels, car rentals, flights, and more. The only problem with this is you may not get a deal, so you really have to be flexible. Some airlines also have deals if you are flexible with travel. It may save you $30-$100 just by being open to a few days of flex.

### Find Your Own Adventure

Finally, book your spring break vacation somewhere off the beaten path. If you are planning on going to the same place as everyone else at the same time, then you will be paying premium prices. If you think outside of the box and plan a trip not typical of spring break, you could save a ton of cash.

So there you go, five awesome tips to help you plan your best spring break ever. Don't forget to travel notice your debit and credit cards before you leave and have a great time. And, if you're going out of the country, get [travel insurance](https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/). It's a small price to pay for coverage that can cost you big in another country, especially if you get sick, injured, or need a medivac.
