A Brief History of New Year’s Celebration
The tradition of celebrating the New Year dates back thousands of years. The earliest recorded New Year’s celebrations took place in ancient Babylon around 4,000 years ago, where the new year was marked by the first new moon following the vernal equinox, signaling the rebirth of the land and a time of renewal.
The Roman calendar initially marked March 1 as the start of the new year. Still, in 46 B.C., Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which set January 1 as the official start of the year. January was named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions, symbolizing looking back at the old year and forward to the new one.
Today, New Year’s is celebrated worldwide with a variety of customs, from fireworks and countdowns to resolutions and parties, all reflecting a shared hope for a fresh start and new possibilities.
Holiday Hours Reminder
To allow our employees to celebrate and spend time with their loved ones, our branches will close early at 1:00 PM on New Year’s Eve, and will be closed all day on New Year’s Day. We encourage our members to plan accordingly and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.
