Getting to live in a place that people travel across the world to visit isn’t something to take for granted. And by taking short breaks to explore your home turf, you can save money while you vacation. Here’s how to make the most out of a Montana staycation, and save big while you do it.  ## Take Advantage of the Shoulder Season When you live in Montana, you get to use the spontaneity that comes from being close to your destination. Before and after the rush of summer crowds, unpredictable weather means that you can sometimes seize that last sunny day without the press of people. It can also help you save, with hotels lowering their rates and gift shops putting souvenirs on clearance.  ## Seize Last-Minute Deals Speaking of off-season hotel deals, you can use services like [Hopper](https://www.hopper.com/) and [Hotwire](http://www.hotewire.com/) to find great hotels at their lowest rates. These last-minute travel apps allow you to take advantage of in-state flexibility and stay at hotels that might otherwise be outside of your budget.  ## Get Outside in Nature Nothing costs less in Montana than a deep breath of fresh air. If you don’t have a [national park pass](https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm), it’s worth getting one to gain access to the wealth of fee-entry federal sites in the state. Montana residents pay for state parks with their vehicle registration, so there’s no additional fee to enter state parks with a Montana license plate on the car. Forest Service and BLM land, along with state trust land and fishing access sites, all offer free access across the state. Go for a hike, grab gear you already have, and take to the woods. You might find rock climbing at a discount, or maybe a raft trip for the whole family that won’t drain your bank account.  ## Enjoy Locals-Only Discounts Look out for locals-only deals and discounts to fully enjoy those staycation savings.
