Why We Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed annually on the third Monday in January, commemorates Dr. King’s birthday, which is January 15. This day recognizes his tireless work toward equality, justice, and nonviolent activism to end racial segregation and discrimination in the United States.
Dr. King’s leadership in pivotal events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington helped shape a more just and inclusive society. His iconic “I Have a Dream” speech remains a powerful symbol of hope and unity.
The holiday was officially signed into law in 1983 and first observed nationwide in 1986, reflecting the nation’s commitment to honoring Dr. King’s vision for civil rights and equality for all.
