At Rocky Mountain Credit Union, we value the rich traditions and diverse cultures of our members and community. As Hanukkah approaches, we would like to take a moment to celebrate this meaningful holiday and share some of its history and interesting facts.
What is Hanukkah?
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem over 2,000 years ago. This rededication followed the successful revolt of the Maccabees against the Seleucid Empire, which had banned Jewish religious practices.
The Miracle of the Oil
One of the most famous stories behind Hanukkah is the miracle of the oil. When the Maccabees reclaimed the temple, they found only a small flask of oil—enough to light the temple’s menorah (a special candelabrum) for just one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days, which was enough time to prepare and consecrate more pure oil.
This is why Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights, with the lighting of the menorah each evening.
Fun Facts About Hanukkah
- Menorah vs. Hanukkiah: The menorah used during Hanukkah has nine branches—eight for each night of the holiday, plus a helper candle called the “shamash,” which is used to light the others. This nine-branched menorah is technically called a hanukkiah.
- Traditional Foods: Foods fried in oil are a staple during Hanukkah, symbolizing the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days. Popular dishes include latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts).
- Dreidel Game: A popular Hanukkah tradition is playing the dreidel, a spinning top game with Hebrew letters that stand for the phrase "A great miracle happened there."
- Gifts and Giving: Although not originally a central part of Hanukkah, gift-giving has become increasingly common, especially among children, adding joy and celebration to the holiday.
