At Rocky Mountain Credit Union, we value and honor the rich cultural traditions of our diverse membership. As Kwanzaa approaches, we would like to take a moment to share the history and significance of this important holiday and extend our warm wishes to all who celebrate.
What is Kwanzaa?
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held annually from December 26 to January 1. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor and activist, as a way to honor African heritage, culture, and community. Rooted in African harvest festival traditions, Kwanzaa celebrates seven core principles known as the Nguzo Saba: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith.
Each day of Kwanzaa focuses on one of these principles, encouraging families and communities to come together to reflect, celebrate, and uplift one another. The holiday emphasizes community, cultural pride, and building a strong foundation for future generations.
